Elves take to Central City streets this Christmas

14 December 2018

Watch out next time you’re in the central city, you just might stumble across a magical Christmas Elf.

The festive friends have arrived straight from the North Pole to spread joy in the city through random acts of kindness including carrying shopping bags, topping up parking meters and giving out vouchers and other goodies.

First spotted on the day of the Santa Parade, the elves have chosen to stay in Christchurch until Christmas!

You’ll find them spreading Christmas cheer up and down Cashel Street Mall, The Crossing, The Terrace and New Regent Street from now until Christmas eve.

The elves are part of ChristchurchNZ’s Explore your Central City this Christmas campaign to encourage residents to reconnect with the city and discover the shops, restaurants, outdoor spaces and cafés that make up the vibrant and growing city centre.

ChristchurchNZ General Manager – Marketing, Brand & Communications Tim Loftus says the elves are just one part of a wider campaign to reignite residents love of the central city.

"So much has changed in the city over the last 12 months; it’s an amazing place to explore. There are new restaurants and cafés opening regularly alongside well-loved favourites; boutiques and contemporary retail spaces ranging from local shops to global chain stores – all set amongst some of the best outdoor spaces to relax and unwind in."

So much has changed in the city over the last 12 months; it’s an amazing place to explore. There are new restaurants and cafés opening regularly alongside well-loved favourites; boutiques and contemporary retail spaces ranging from local shops to global chain stores – all set amongst some of the best outdoor spaces to relax and unwind in.

“But rather than telling people what we think are the best bits of the central city, we’ve asked people who are in here often what their favourite haunts are – so you’ll see online content, videos and giant graphics on the footpath with recommendations from locals on what to do and where to go.”

The campaign will include a special eveningTwlight in the Central City’ on Friday 14 December from 6pm to 8pm to kick off the Christmas late night shopping period.  The elves will be out in full force, with promotions and special offers available at stores throughout the city.

“We’re inviting residents to come in and have a look around – there’s so many hidden gems that people may not know about if they haven’t been into the city lately. It’s the perfect place to do your Christmas shopping, - then pop in and see Santa at Ballantynes, get helped by an elf and have a well-deserved rest at one of our hospitality hot spots,Mr Loftus says.
