ChristchurchNZ to grow major events portfolio

02 March 2018

ChristchurchNZ is seeking to revitalise the city’s major events and festivals portfolio and encourages event managers to share their ideas for igniting excitement in Christchurch.

General Manager of Attraction Linda Falwasser says the economic development and city profile agency will partner with event managers and Christchurch City Council to attract talented individuals and major events to our city.

“As the agency charged with igniting bold ambition in Ōtautahi Christchurch, people can now come directly to us and pitch their ideas on holding major events, in Christchurch,” Ms Falwasser says.

Ms Falwasser says ChristchurchNZ are open to review opportunities throughout the year for events that contribute to the outcomes of Christchurch’s major events strategy and those activities that meet major event status will be assessed on a case by case basis.

“We know that events amplify the spirit of our people; ignite excitement and bring communities together, attracting visitors and stimulating economic activity".

“The city currently has a range of major events on offer but we need to strengthen and develop our portfolio to ensure we attract the right kind of events to Christchurch and that these align with the goals of the city’s Major Events Strategy.

“We know that events amplify the spirit of our people; ignite excitement and bring communities together, attracting visitors and stimulating economic activity.

“These major events are key to building our city’s profile nationally and globally and help draw in big crowds from outside our region, which results in positive economic growth for local businesses such as accommodation and hospitality providers,”

“However, economic benefits are just one key factor that make these events important to our region. They also make Ōtautahi Christchurch a more desirable place for people to live, work, play, study, invest or do business,” she says.

Ms Falwasser says putting together and successfully operating a major event is no mean feat and requires a concerted team effort from organisers, sponsors, volunteers and the wider Christchurch community.

“That’s why we want to ensure we are attracting events that truly ignite excitement within Christchurch, as well as bring in visitors from outside our region.”

“And once our visitors get here, it’s up to all of us to show them what a great place Christchurch is and all the wonderful things they can do here.”

• If your event strongly aligns with the goals and priorities outlined in the strategy, please contact the Major Events team to discuss further.
